Gabby Agbonlahor: “It Would Be a Miracle to Win the Title with Darwin Núñez”

Former Aston Villa captain Gabby Agbonlahor has claimed that it would take a “miracle” for Liverpool to win the Premier League title with Darwin Núñez leading the line.

The Uruguayan striker missed a crucial chance in Liverpool’s 2-2 draw against Aston Villa on Wednesday night, reigniting debates about his composure and finishing ability.

Núñez, who has scored just six goals in 35 Premier League appearances this season, squandered a golden opportunity to put Liverpool ahead at Villa Park. After a brilliant run and pass from Conor Bradley, Dominic Szoboszlai squared the ball to Núñez, leaving him with an open goal. However, the striker blasted his effort over the bar, leaving fans and pundits frustrated.

Agbonlahor, speaking on talkSPORT, expressed his doubts about Núñez’s ability to deliver in high-pressure situations.

“It would be a miracle to win the title with Darwin Núñez up front,” he said. “He works hard, he’s got speed and strength, but he lacks the composure of a top striker. Look at the strikers Liverpool have had in the past – Ian Rush, Robbie Fowler, Luis Suárez, Fernando Torres. Núñez doesn’t have that clinical edge.”

The pundit also highlighted Núñez’s inconsistent form this season, pointing out that two of his six league goals came in stoppage time against Brentford.

“For a Liverpool striker, those numbers aren’t good enough,” Agbonlahor added. “When he goes through one-on-one, you don’t have confidence he’ll score. He panics, takes too many touches, or just blasts it over. You can’t win titles with a striker who misses chances like that.”

Agbonlahor’s comments come as Liverpool’s lead at the top of the Premier League was cut to eight points, with Arsenal having a game in hand. The Reds face a crucial week ahead, with matches against Manchester City and Newcastle United, and Núñez’s form could prove pivotal in their title bid.

Despite his criticism, Agbonlahor acknowledged that Núñez’s work rate and physicality make him a valuable asset. However, he suggested that Liverpool may need to consider their options in the summer.

“I think Núñez will leave for sure,” he said. “There was interest from Saudi Arabia in January, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he moves on. Liverpool need a striker who can deliver consistently if they want to compete for titles.”

Liverpool fans have been divided over Núñez, with some appreciating his effort and potential, while others grow increasingly frustrated with his lack of end product.
