Liverpool Appoint Colin Stewart to Lead Goalkeeper Development

Liverpool have named former Rangers coach Colin Stewart to lead the development and progress of goalkeepers across all levels of the club.

Stewart, a former Scotland U21 international, will work closely with Xavi Valero, who returned to Anfield this summer as the head of first-team goalkeeper coaching. Together, they’ll oversee the training and performance of the senior shot-stoppers, while Stewart takes on a wider role shaping the future of Liverpool’s young goalkeepers.

A big part of Stewart’s job will be guiding Academy talents into the senior game. He’ll manage their loan plans and act as a bridge between the U21s, the first team, and the club’s loan department, making sure the pathway from youth to top-level football is smooth and well-planned.

Before joining Liverpool, Stewart spent nine years with Rangers. He started with the academy keepers and was later promoted to first-team goalkeeping coach, a role he held for seven seasons. He even briefly stepped up as joint-caretaker manager when Steven Gerrard left in 2021.

In addition to his club work, Stewart has long experience with the Scottish FA, where he spent more than a decade educating goalkeeping coaches across the country.

Stewart’s arrival continues the ongoing changes behind the scenes under Arne Slot. Former assistant coach John Heitinga has left to manage Ajax, with Giovanni van Bronckhorst taking his place. Claudio Taffarel has also moved on, with Valero returning to lead the senior goalkeeping group.
