Rugby Borough 0-2 Liverpool Women: Reds’ Late Goals Seal FA Cup Win

Liverpool FC Women secured a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Rugby Borough in the fifth round of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup. Despite dominating possession, the Reds struggled to break down a resilient Rugby Borough defense until late goals from Marie Höbinger and Mia Enderby sealed the win.
Liverpool started brightly but found it difficult to adapt to the bobbly astroturf pitch. Early chances came through set pieces and crosses, but Rugby Borough’s defense held firm.
Sophie Roman Haug came closest for Liverpool, hitting the post with a powerful strike from outside the box. Despite their dominance, the Reds failed to register a shot on target in the first half, leaving the game goalless at the break.

Manager Matt Beard made four changes at halftime, switching to a 4-3-3 formation. The Reds continued to press, but Rugby Borough threatened on the counter, forcing goalkeeper Rachael Laws into a crucial save. Liverpool finally broke the deadlock in the 84th minute when Marie Höbinger fired a stunning shot from outside the box into the far corner. Just minutes later, Höbinger turned provider, lofting a perfect ball for Mia Enderby to volley home and double the lead.
Rugby Borough pushed for a late consolation, causing a scramble in Liverpool’s box, but the Reds held on to secure their place in the sixth round. The victory was a testament to Liverpool’s persistence and quality, despite the challenges posed by the pitch and a determined opponent.
