Liverpool U19s Held By Atletico In UEFA Youth League

Liverpool began their UEFA Youth League campaign with a 0-0 draw against Atletico Madrid at the AXA Training Centre on Wednesday.
Rob Page’s side worked hard throughout and created some good openings, but could not find a breakthrough in a match where both defences came out on top.
The game had a setback early on as striker Will Wright was forced off with an injury after a challenge. Despite the disruption, Liverpool grew into the contest and came closest before the interval.
Trent Kone-Doherty’s pressing forced an error from Atletico goalkeeper Diego Piqueras, the loose ball falling to Kareem Ahmed who prodded wide. Josh Sonni-Lambie also went close with a curling effort soon after.

Atletico threatened in the second half through Sergio Esteban and Jesus Barrios, but the Reds stood firm, with Carter Pinnington making several outstanding blocks.
At the other end, Kieran Morrison twice went close, including a free-kick that narrowly cleared the crossbar. Ahmed also tested Piqueras with a strike from distance.
Bailey Hall produced a smart late save to deny Esteban, ensuring Liverpool earned a point from their opening Group D fixture.
Liverpool U19s XI: Hall, Esdaille, Pinnington, Lucky, Ayman, Upton, Morrison, Nyoni, Wright (Ahmed 12, Lonmeni 90+2), Sonni-Lambie, Kone-Doherty (Bradshaw 74).
