Liverpool vs Preston To Go Ahead On Sunday As Club Mourns Jota

Liverpool will play its first pre-season friendly on Sunday when it travels to Deepdale to face Preston North End. The game, which kicks off at 3 pm, will go ahead as originally scheduled despite the tragic death of Diogo Jota and his younger brother, André Silva.

The Portuguese forward tragically passed away last Thursday in a car crash in northern Spain. In recent days, discussions took place between both clubs, and with the unanimous agreement of players and staff, the decision has been made to proceed with the scheduled fixture.

Liverpool’s squad returned to the AXA Training Centre on Tuesday to begin pre-season preparations. The start date had been delayed following news of Jota’s death, with the club giving players more time to grieve. Many members of the team also travelled to Portugal over the weekend to attend the funeral of their teammate and friend.

Arne Slot, preparing for his second season in charge after guiding Liverpool to the Premier League title last year, also visited Anfield with his wife Mirjam. The couple laid flowers at the growing shrine outside the stadium and left a handwritten message:

“Diogo, we had the same dream, and we fulfilled it together. Andre and yourself will forever be in our hearts.

Preston are working with Liverpool officials on plans to honour Jota before the game. The atmosphere is expected to be emotional, as the Reds step onto the pitch for the first time since the tragedy.

Many tributes have already been paid by players and staff. Andy Robertson, who was present at the funeral, wrote:

“Our hearts are broken, but feeling very grateful for the memories you gave us all. I will miss. Love you, brother, Robbo.”

“Down to earth, determined, a great finisher and above all loved and respected by all who knew him.”

Liverpool vs Preston Broadcast Details

The match will be televised live on ITV1, with coverage starting at 2:50 pm. Joe Speight and former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock will be on commentary.

Although the agreement to air the game was made before Jota’s passing, the broadcast now takes on a much deeper emotional meaning, a chance for fans everywhere to come together and pay tribute.

Sunday’s match will not just mark the start of Liverpool’s summer schedule. It will be a moment to remember Diogo Jota, honour his legacy, and show support for those he left behind.
