New date set for final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park

The Merseyside derby between Everton and Liverpool, originally planned for December 7, has been rescheduled to Wednesday, February 12. This game, eagerly awaited by fans, was postponed due to the high winds and destruction caused by Storm Darragh. While the new date seems convenient for both teams, it could still create challenges for Liverpool.

Liverpool’s schedule is already busy, and the new derby date clashes with the first leg of the Champions League knockout playoffs. These games are set for February 11 and February 12. Liverpool’s place in the top eight of the Champions League group stage is not yet certain. If they fail to secure a top-eight finish, they might have to play in the playoff round, which could force another rescheduling of the derby or the European game.

Currently, Liverpool are performing well in Europe under manager Arne Slot. They lead the 36-team table with 18 points and are six points ahead of ninth-placed Borussia Dortmund. Even if they falter, they are guaranteed to finish no lower than 12th. To avoid the playoffs, they need just one point from their final two group games against Lille on January 21 and PSV Eindhoven on January 29. The odds are in their favor, but until the games are played, uncertainty remains.

The rescheduled derby falls in the middle of a busy February for both clubs. Liverpool will face Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup on February 8 and Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League on February 16. Everton, meanwhile, will play Bournemouth in the FA Cup on February 8 and Crystal Palace in the league on February 15. The derby is also significant for Everton’s manager, David Moyes, as it will be his first Merseyside derby since returning to Goodison Park. A strong performance could mark an important moment in his second spell at the club.

Liverpool’s European campaign has been impressive, thanks to Slot’s tactical expertise. However, juggling European and domestic competitions remains a challenge. The derby will test their squad’s depth and their ability to handle the pressure of competing on multiple fronts. For Everton, the game is a chance to show their renewed determination under Moyes and boost their season with a memorable result.
