Norwich Boss Reacts to Speculation Over Kaide Gordon’s January Recall

Norwich manager Johannes Hoff Thorup has addressed rumours that Liverpool may recall loanee Kaide Gordon in January, stating that the decision will ultimately be up to the player himself.

Since joining Norwich on loan in the summer, Gordon has made just one start in the Championship for the Canaries, which has raised concerns regarding his limited playing time. As a result, talks about a potential recall in January have been scheduled, as reported by Paul Gorst of the Liverpool Echo.

Thorup, however, has reacted to the speculation, offering insight into why he would prefer not to send the 20-year-old winger back to Merseyside.

The Danish coach shared with the media, including Pink Un: “The ideal situation would have been for him to be starting every week. Unfortunately, that’s not the case right now.”

“At Norwich, we are focused on developing him, improving his game, and treating him as one of the squad members, as we should be doing. We will continue this approach.”

Thorup went on to explain that he isn’t considering sending Gordon back to Liverpool at the moment, given the busy fixture schedule ahead. “I can easily see him working his way back into the team if he trains well and performs as expected. There’s always a chance for him.”

Ultimately, Thorup emphasized that the decision about Gordon’s future lies with the player: “It’s his career, and the next step is up to him. If he wants to stay and compete for a spot, I’d be thrilled to have him because he’s a talented player, and we need good players.”

The Norwich boss also provided some context as to why Gordon hasn’t been a regular in the starting lineup, saying: “He’s facing challenges in getting into the team, particularly when it comes to the physical and tactical demands.”

“We need more than 20 players to maintain the level of competition we strive for. It’s a natural process, and at the moment, I’ve prioritized other players.”

Despite Norwich sitting 12th in the Championship, eight points off the playoff spots and without a win in their last three matches, Gordon’s situation remains fluid. After being left out of the last three matchday squads, he came on as a late substitute in Norwich’s recent 2-1 home loss to Burnley.

Thorup further clarified his approach to team selection, explaining that Gordon’s absences don’t necessarily indicate a lack of future opportunities, should he remain beyond January: “It’s all subject to change.”

“I pick the 20 players I believe are best suited for the upcoming game. That’s my responsibility, and it’s what I will do every time.”

“If you’re not in the team, it’s a decision based on the fact that I believe others are more suited for that week’s match. But that can change, especially in a league with so many games. We’re heading into a period with tight schedules, and players must remain ready to step in.”

Thorup concluded by telling players who may not be in the starting lineup to maintain high standards and continue working hard, regardless of whether they play: “If you’re not in the team, the key is to keep up your efforts every day. That’s the only way to earn your place.”
