Trey Nyoni Becomes Liverpool’s Youngest European Debutant

Trey Nyoni made history on Wednesday night by becoming Liverpool’s youngest-ever player to appear in European competition, breaking a 33-year-old club record. The 17-year-old midfielder made his debut in the Champions League clash against PSV Eindhoven, replacing Andy Robertson in the 64th minute.
In doing so, Nyoni surpassed the previous record held by Phil Charnock, who was 17 years and 215 days old when he made his European debut in 1992. Nyoni’s achievement came just 213 days after his 17th birthday and sets him apart as a key figure in Liverpool’s future. The midfielder, who joined from Leicester City in September 2023, is not yet 18, with his birthday in late June.
Nyoni’s record-breaking appearance was one of four Champions League debuts on the night for Liverpool. Alongside Nyoni, Amara Nallo joined starters Jayden Danns and James McConnell in making their European bow. Nyoni’s debut adds to an impressive list of milestones, including his senior debut for Liverpool in last season’s FA Cup tie against Southampton, where he became the club’s joint-fourth youngest player at just 16 years, eight months, and eight days.
The midfielder’s versatility has already seen him start in the Carabao Cup earlier this season, and he is expected to play an important role in Liverpool’s future campaigns.
Nyoni’s achievement places him among some of Liverpool’s most exciting young talents. The club’s youngest-ever European debutants include Raheem Sterling, Michael Owen, and Ben Doak, while Stefan Bajcetic previously held the Champions League record.
