Gary Lineker has applauded Liverpool’s recruitment team for their decision to appoint Arne Slot as Jurgen Klopp’s successor.
The Match of the Day host believes the club made a smart move in choosing the Dutchman to take over after Klopp’s emotional exit last January. Klopp, who brought the Premier League and Champions League titles to Anfield, left behind a legacy that seemed impossible to follow.
When Klopp announced his departure, many wondered who could fill his shoes. Xabi Alonso was a fan favorite, but he chose to stay at Bayer Leverkusen. Liverpool’s recruitment team then turned to Arne Slot, who had impressed at Feyenoord.
Nine months later, Slot has proven to be the right choice, leading Liverpool to the top of the Premier League and making them strong contenders in the Champions League.
On The Rest Is Football podcast, Lineker said, “Liverpool’s recruitment team deserves huge credit for bringing in Arne Slot. He’s taken over from a legend and has done a fantastic job. The club needed someone with a strong personality to continue Klopp’s work, and Slot has been perfect.”
Micah Richards agreed, adding, “Slot was the right man for the job. His tactics and man-management have been spot on.”
Since arriving, Slot has transformed Liverpool. His approach has made the team more balanced, with a strong attack and solid defense. Players like Ryan Gravenberch have flourished under his guidance.
Currently, Liverpool are six points clear at the top of the Premier League, with a game in hand over Arsenal. In the Champions League, they topped their group, securing a place in the knockout stages. Slot also has a Carabao Cup final against Newcastle United to look forward to.
With 29 wins, five draws, and just four losses this season, Slot’s start has been impressive. Lineker credited Klopp for leaving the club in good shape but emphasized the recruitment team’s role in finding the right successor.
“Klopp left the club in great condition, but the recruitment team made a fantastic choice in Slot. He’s taken the team to the next level,” he said.
