‘Tough Game’ – Höbinger on Liverpool’s FA Cup Quarter-Final Run

Liverpool Women midfielder Marie Höbinger reflected on a challenging but successful FA Cup fifth-round tie as the Reds secured a 2-0 win over Rugby Borough to advance to the quarter-finals.

Höbinger broke the deadlock in the 83rd minute with a stunning strike from outside the box, before Mia Enderby sealed the victory with a second goal. The Reds will discover their last-eight opponents on Tuesday.

Reflecting on the match, Höbinger said: “It was a very tough game, and we couldn’t really break their block down. It was crosses and shots, and I’m glad it went in.”

The Austrian acknowledged the challenges of the match, including the windy conditions and Rugby Borough’s resilient defense. “We could have been more dominant in possession and created more chances, but it was all about being patient. I’m thankful it went in at the end, and the second goal was obviously very good for us as well.”

Manager Matt Beard made four tactical substitutions at halftime, switching to a back four to add more attacking options. Höbinger explained: “It was more tactical to have more bodies up the pitch. We adapted to the game better in that formation, and there’s a lot to learn from.”

Looking ahead to the quarter-finals, she added: “We’re so happy we got the win, and we’re all really excited to be in the next round. It’s always more exciting to play in this competition, and we have a lot to play for.”
