January Transfer Window 2025: Key Dates, Free Agents, and Liverpool’s Plans

As the new year begins, the January transfer window officially kicks off, allowing clubs to bolster their squads throughout the first month of 2025.

This transfer period starts on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, and will remain open for nearly five weeks, closing at 11 pm GMT on February 3.

The opportunity to bring in new players for Premier League teams ends simultaneously with major leagues in France, Germany, Spain, and Scotland, although precise timings might differ slightly.

In contrast, Italian clubs have to finalize their deals from January 2 to January 31, while Turkey’s Super Lig opens later, on January 13, and remains active until February 11.

For Liverpool Women, their mid-season transfer window begins on January 1 and concludes at 11 pm on January 30.

Free Agents

Starting January 1, any player whose contract expires in July can begin discussions and agree to terms for a move to a foreign club.

However, these players won’t officially join their new teams until their current deals end in the summer.

This situation applies to Liverpool players like Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Mohamed Salah. Notably, Real Madrid appears particularly interested in the vice-captain.

Earlier in December, Van Dijk dismissed the idea of a deadline for contract negotiations, emphasizing that “there is no deadline at all” to finalize an agreement.

Meanwhile, players who are already free agents can sign with a club at any point, as they are not tied to any team.

Will Liverpool Make Moves?

During Liverpool’s Premier League match against Southampton at St. Mary’s Stadium in November, Sporting Director Richard Hughes was in attendance.

According to Lewis Steele of the Mail, Liverpool is expected to spend the next few weeks preparing for summer moves rather than making immediate signings this window.

The club plans to stay “opportunistic,” as they did in the summer, though Steele notes there are “no specific targets” for January.

It’s likely that some players will be recalled from loans, and new arrangements may be made for academy players for the remainder of the season.

Liverpool’s most recent mid-season acquisition was Cody Gakpo in 2023. Past January signings like Luis Diaz (2022), Takumi Minamino (2020), and Virgil van Dijk (2018) indicate the club’s readiness to act when necessary.
