Liverpool confirm the departure of manager Matt Beard

Liverpool have confirmed that the club have parted ways with head coach Matt Beard. The decision takes effect immediately, marking the end of Beard’s second spell with the team.

This season, Liverpool Women have struggled in the Women’s Super League (WSL), currently sitting in seventh place with just four wins. Last season, Beard led the team to an impressive top-four finish and was named WSL Manager of the Season. However, this campaign has been challenging, with injuries to key players affecting the team’s performance. They are now 14 points adrift of the top four.

In a statement, Liverpool thanked Beard for his contributions, particularly for guiding the team back to the WSL in 2022 after winning the FA Women’s Championship. The club said, “We have all experienced some fantastic moments with Matt as manager of LFC Women, and we are grateful for his hard work. This was a difficult decision, but we believe it is the right step for future success.”

Amber Whiteley will take over as interim manager while the club searches for a permanent replacement. Beard first joined Liverpool in 2012 and led the team to back-to-back WSL titles in 2013 and 2014. After managing West Ham and Bristol City, he returned to Liverpool in 2021 and successfully secured promotion back to the WSL.

Liverpool’s board, including Fenway Sports Group president Mike Gordon and CEO Billy Hogan, expressed their gratitude to Matt Beard for his efforts. The club is now focused on finding a new manager to build on the progress made under Beard and achieve greater success in the future.
