Liverpool Women Fall 4-0 to Manchester City in WSL Clash

Liverpool Women suffered a 4-0 defeat against Manchester City in the Barclays Women’s Super League on Sunday evening. Khadija Shaw’s first-half brace put City in control, with Jill Roord and Gracie Prior adding second-half goals to secure the win.

City dominated possession from the start, but Liverpool’s organized defense kept them at bay early on. The hosts came close in the 10th minute when Aoba Fujino’s volley hit the post, and Teagan Micah denied Yui Hasegawa’s follow-up effort. Micah also saved a powerful shot from Shaw moments later.

Despite City’s pressure, Liverpool had two golden opportunities to take the lead. First, Leanne Kiernan missed a one-on-one chance after a defensive error, and then Ceri Holland’s shot was cleared off the line by Rebecca Knaak after Kiernan failed to round the goalkeeper.

City broke the deadlock in the 30th minute through Shaw, who finished Mary Fowler’s precise pass despite Liverpool’s offside appeals. Shaw doubled the lead just before halftime, expertly controlling Fowler’s cross and firing past Micah.

After the break, City continued to dominate. Roord made it 3-0 in the 60th minute, slotting home a rebound after her initial shot was blocked. Prior then added a fourth in the 77th minute, her cross looping over Micah and into the net.

Liverpool’s Cornelia Kapocs had two late chances, but City goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita denied her both times. Micah made a stunning save in stoppage time to tip Kerolin’s shot onto the post, but it was little consolation for the Reds.
