Liverpool Fans Sing for 8 Minutes in Symbolic Tribute to Jota

Liverpool fans continue to mourn Jota, whose sudden passing alongside his brother André in a tragic car accident in Spain has left an emotional hole in the heart of the club.

In the days following the heartbreaking news, supporters gathered outside Anfield to lay flowers, scarves, and jerseys in his memory.

Many also signed the book of condolences made available both at the stadium and online, a digital space where thousands from around the world continue to pour in tributes.

The club’s first match since the tragedy, a pre-season friendly against Preston North End at Deepdale, was always going to carry heavy emotion. And when the clock ticked into the 20th minute, marking the shirt number Jota wore with pride, a poignant scene unfolded in the stands.

From minute 20 through to minute 28, a number symbolising Jota’s age at the time of his passing, Liverpool fans rose as one to sing his anthem: “His name is Diogo.” For eight uninterrupted minutes, the song rang out, powerful and raw, echoing across the stadium with deep meaning and unity.

It was a stirring tribute that transcended the game itself, a collective act of remembrance that captured the spirit of a fanbase grieving one of its own.

Many supporters have since called for the gesture to become a regular feature at Anfield, a ritual of remembrance to honour Jota’s life and legacy long beyond the headlines. Some believe it could take its place among the club’s most sacred traditions.

On the pitch, Liverpool went on to secure a 3-1 win with goals from Conor Bradley, Darwin Núñez and Cody Gakpo, but the result almost felt secondary on a night shaped by reflection and emotion.
