Steve Nicol Slams Alexander-Arnold After Poor Display vs. Bournemouth

Liverpool secured a vital 2-0 victory over AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League, thanks to a brace from Mohamed Salah and an outstanding performance from Alisson Becker. However, not every Liverpool player impressed on the day, with Trent Alexander-Arnold coming under heavy criticism for his defensive struggles.

The right-back, who was later substituted due to injury, endured a tough evening as Bournemouth’s attackers continuously targeted him. His performance did not go unnoticed, as former Liverpool defender and ESPN pundit Steve Nicol delivered a scathing assessment.

Nicol Blasts Alexander-Arnold’s Defending

Speaking on ESPN FC, Nicol did not hold back in his criticism of the England international.

“I keep looking at Alexander-Arnold, and honestly, that whole talk at the start of the season about his defending improving was just propaganda,” Nicol said. “Today, he was absolutely woeful. I think he would have been taken off even if he hadn’t picked up a knock, that’s how bad he was defensively.”

Alexander-Arnold has already faced scrutiny for his defensive performances this season, with a similar struggle in Liverpool’s 0-0 draw against Manchester United last month. With key matches coming up, the 26-year-old will be eager to put this performance behind him.

Is Alexander-Arnold Too Exposed?

Nicol further explained that Alexander-Arnold thrives in Liverpool’s system when the team dominates possession and when defenders like Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konaté, and Joël Matip cover for him.

“He’s not lazy, but he looks lost when he’s isolated,” Nicol added. “Over the years, he’s had Van Dijk and others to bail him out. But when he’s left alone, you have to shut your eyes and pray.”

Liverpool Looking Ahead

With Liverpool still in contention for multiple trophies this season, the last thing they need is defensive frailties to be exposed. Alexander-Arnold’s injury will now be assessed by the club’s medical team.

Liverpool’s next challenge will be the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Tottenham, and if Alexander-Arnold is unavailable, Conor Bradley could be handed a big opportunity to step up.
