Virgil van Dijk Extends Liverpool Stay with New Two-Year Contract

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has signed a new contract to keep him at Anfield beyond the 2024-25 season.
The Dutch defender has agreed fresh terms after months of behind-the-scenes discussions, bringing an end to speculation over his future. The deal sees the 33-year-old commit to another two years with the Reds, further strengthening the club’s leadership and defensive core under manager Arne Slot.
Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com after signing his new contract, Van Dijk couldn’t hide his joy at committing his future to the club.
“I’m very happy, very proud,” Van Dijk said. “There are so many emotions, obviously, that go through my head right now, speaking about it. It’s a proud feeling, it’s a feeling of joy. It’s just incredible. The journey I’ve had so far in my career, to be able to extend it with another two years at this club is amazing, and I’m so happy.
“It was always Liverpool. That was the case. It was always in my head, it was always the plan, and it was always Liverpool. There wasn’t any doubt in my head that this is the place to be for me and my family. I’m one of Liverpool. Someone called me the other day an adopted Scouser – I’m really proud to hear these things, it gives me a great feeling.”

Van Dijk joined Liverpool from Southampton in January 2018 for a then-world record £75 million fee for a defender. Since then, he has gone on to become one of the most influential centre-backs in world football, helping the club secure seven major trophies, including the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup.
Despite turning 34 this summer, the Dutchman has shown no signs of slowing down. Liverpool have kept 20 clean sheets in matches he has featured in this season, underlining his continued importance on the pitch.
His commitment comes just a week after Mohamed Salah also extended his stay at the club. The duo’s renewals reflect Liverpool’s ambition to remain competitive at the highest level and provide continuity ahead of a transitional summer.
Sporting director Richard Hughes led the negotiations with Van Dijk and his agent Neil Fewings, with confidence throughout that a deal would be reached.
Van Dijk, who took over the captain’s armband last summer, believes Liverpool still offers the right platform for success.
“I joined this club for many reasons – the passion, the history, the fans. Being part of that and trying to add to the legacy has always been my goal,” he said earlier this week.
As Liverpool close in on a potential 20th league title, the extension of their captain’s contract will be seen as another huge win, both on and off the pitch.
