Who Are Accrington Stanley? Liverpool FA Cup Opponents

Liverpool’s quest for an incredible quadruple continues as they face off against League Two side Accrington Stanley at Anfield this Saturday. The Reds have experienced a slight dip in form, with their 2-2 Premier League draw at home to Manchester United followed by a narrow 1-0 loss to Tottenham in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semifinals. For manager Arne Slot, this FA Cup third-round tie presents a perfect opportunity to rotate his squad, give key players some much-needed rest, and allow others to showcase their abilities on a big stage.

For Accrington Stanley, this match represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to face one of England’s biggest clubs. Competing in the fourth tier of English football, the underdog visitors know the odds are stacked against them, but making history by upsetting Liverpool would be a dream come true. Progressing to the next round might seem unlikely, but for Accrington, this game is about more than advancing—it’s about proving they belong on the national stage.

Who Are Accrington Stanley?

Accrington Stanley currently competes in League Two, the fourth tier of English football. They play their home matches at the Crown Ground, a stadium with a capacity of 5,450, situated in the Lancashire town of Accrington, around 20 miles north of Manchester.

The club, as it exists today, was officially founded in 1968, but its roots go much deeper. An earlier version of Accrington Stanley was part of the English Football League from 1921 to 1962 before financial difficulties forced its dissolution. After playing non-league football for many decades, Accrington secured promotion to League Two in 2006, fighting hard to maintain their position despite frequent relegation battles. In 2018, they celebrated a historic League Two title, earning a place in League One, though they were relegated back to the fourth tier at the end of the 2022/23 season.

Why Are They Called ‘Accrington Stanley’?

The origins of Accrington Stanley’s unusual name have sparked much curiosity, but one popular explanation ties it to a local working men’s club. The patrons of the Stanley Arms, located on Stanley Street in Accrington, were some of the earliest members. In the late 1890s, they formed a football team known as Stanley Villa. Just a few years later, after the town’s first professional club, Accrington FC, resigned from the league, amateur teams began adopting the town name. Accrington Stanley entered regional leagues in the late 1890s, and thus, the club’s name was born.

The Famous ‘Accrington Stanley, Who Are They?’ Moment

Football fans of a certain era will instantly recall the iconic milk commercial from the 1980s that immortalized Accrington Stanley. The advertisement featured two boys wearing Liverpool jerseys — during the peak of the Reds’ dominance in English and European football — debating the benefits of drinking milk to boost their footballing careers.

One boy confidently tells the other that Liverpool legend Ian Rush once quipped, “If I don’t drink lots of milk, I’ll only be good enough to play for Accrington Stanley.” When the second boy asks in confusion, “Accrington Stanley? Who are they?” the first boy responds with a mischievous “Exactly.” This playful ad became a cultural touchstone and put the club in the spotlight, a status they still carry to this day.
