Liverpool Midfielder James McConnell Joins Ajax on Loan

Liverpool midfielder James McConnell has joined Ajax on loan for the remainder of the 2025-26 season, following the signing of a new long-term contract with the club.

The 20-year-old will gain further senior experience in the Eredivisie, reuniting with former Reds coach John Heitinga, now in charge at Ajax, and goalkeeper Vitezslav Jaros, who is also on loan in Amsterdam.

McConnell joined Liverpool’s Academy at U15 level from Sunderland and has since progressed through the ranks, making 13 senior appearances. He made his competitive debut in October 2023 when Jurgen Klopp brought him on in a Europa League win over Toulouse at Anfield.

During his breakthrough season, McConnell featured in nine games, registering an FA Cup assist against Norwich City and earning a Carabao Cup winner’s medal as a substitute in the 2024 final against Chelsea. He made four appearances under Arne Slot last term, including his first Champions League outing at PSV Eindhoven in January.

Ajax sporting director Alex Kroes praised the England youth international, saying:

“James has a real winner’s mentality and will bring the necessary extra power to the squad. With him, we are adding a player who, as a defensive holding midfielder, can contribute valuable qualities to the team.

He has been part of Liverpool’s first-team set-up for several seasons and therefore knows exactly what is required at the very highest level. He has great potential and will be given the opportunity here to continue his development. We are very pleased that he has chosen Ajax.”

Ajax, runners-up in the Eredivisie last season, have started the 2025-26 campaign strongly, picking up seven points from their opening three matches and preparing for the Champions League group phase.
