Isaac Mabaya Joins Wigan Athletic On Season-Long Loan

Liverpool defender Isaac Mabaya has joined Wigan Athletic on loan for the 2025-26 season.
The 20-year-old right-back becomes Ryan Lowe’s seventh signing of the summer. Mabaya will now look to gain his first consistent taste of senior football at the Brick Community Stadium.
Born in Preston and on Liverpool’s books since the age of six, Mabaya progressed through the youth ranks at Kirkby and made his name in the U18s before catching the eye during the Reds’ 2022-23 pre-season tour of Asia under Jürgen Klopp. He went on to sign his first professional contract in 2023 and has been a regular at U21 level over the past two years.

Earlier this year, he made his competitive debut for Liverpool in the FA Cup match against Plymouth Argyle. He also featured on the bench in the Champions League against PSV Eindhoven.
Speaking after the move was announced, Mabaya said:
I am delighted to be here, and can’t wait to get started. Speaking to the Head Coach about what he expects from me, I believe I can bring value to the team.
I’ve had a few conversations with the Gaffer, and I really like his philosophies and way of playing. I think it will be a great place to develop my career.

Wigan boss Ryan Lowe revealed he’s long admired the young defender. “I’ve known of Isaac for many years – he’s had a few injuries, but feels like he’s back to where he belongs,” he said.
“He’s a powerful right back who will definitely give us something down the right-hand side. We’re delighted to have him on board.”
Wigan kick off their League One campaign at home to Northampton Town on Saturday.
