Revealed: Liverpool players attending Jota’s funeral

Liverpool players and staff are expected to attend the funeral of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva on Saturday morning in Gondomar, Portugal, following the tragic car accident that claimed both their lives.

The joint funeral will take place at the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar, a 17th-century Catholic church in the town where Jota grew up. Thousands of mourners are expected to gather, with only a small group allowed inside the church while the rest will pay their respects outside.

Although the club has not officially released the full list of attending players, several members of Liverpool’s staff and former stars have already been seen in Portugal.

Club doctor Jonathan Power, head physio Lee Nobes, and sporting director Richard Hughes attended the wake on Friday. They were joined by FSG football bosses Michael Edwards and Julian Ward, showing the depth of support from all levels of the club.

Former Liverpool players Thiago Alcântara and Fabinho were also pictured at the wake, along with Portugal teammate Diogo Dalot, super agent Jorge Mendes, and former Chelsea manager André Villas-Boas.

According to PA Sport, Liverpool are believed to have chartered a private flight to Portugal for players to attend the funeral. While most of the squad remains on summer break, reports from Portugal say several first-team players are expected to fly in. Local broadcaster SIC stated that Jota’s “heartbroken colleagues” would arrive in time for the 10 am funeral mass.

Liverpool have delayed the start of pre-season testing out of respect. Arne Slot’s squad was due to return on Friday, but the club postponed the schedule to allow players and staff to grieve together.

Manager Arne Slot described the sense of loss as “absolute”, saying:

“Diogo was not just our player. He was a loved one to all of us… We need everyone at the club to stand together and to be there for one another.”

Tributes have poured in across the football world and beyond. Jota’s former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson travelled to Anfield, where he left a personal note and flowers. “Rest in peace, my friend, along with your brother Andre. We will all miss you,” the message read.

Flags at Anfield are flying at half-mast, club stores have shut, and stadium tours have been cancelled as Liverpool mourns one of their own.

The final farewell on Saturday will be a deeply emotional moment, not just for Liverpool but for the whole of Portugal.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst joins Liverpool coaching staff

Liverpool have officially confirmed Giovanni van Bronckhorst as their new assistant coach, with Xavi Valero returning to take charge of the club’s goalkeeping department ahead of the 2025-26 season.

Van Bronckhorst joins Arne Slot’s staff, subject to visa approval, as a replacement for John Heitinga, who left to become Ajax’s head coach.

The former Netherlands international brings plenty of experience, both as a player and manager, having led Feyenoord to the Eredivisie title in 2017 and guided Rangers to the Europa League final in 2022.

It’s Van Bronckhorst’s first return to the Premier League since his time as a player at Arsenal. The 50-year-old has also managed in China with Guangzhou R&F and, most recently, had a short spell in Turkey with Besiktas, leaving the club in late 2024. He has been working as a UEFA analyst since the start of this year.

Xavi Valero also returns to Anfield as head of first-team goalkeeper coaching after spending seven years with West Ham United.

The Spaniard previously worked at Liverpool under Rafael Benitez and followed him to clubs like Inter Milan, Chelsea, Napoli and Real Madrid before a stint in China and then the Premier League.

Valero’s return marks a full change in Liverpool’s goalkeeping setup, with both Fabian Otte and Claudio Taffarel departing the club.

Otte leaves after one season at Anfield, having helped the team win the Premier League in his short spell working under Slot. The former USA national team coach joined Liverpool last summer from Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Taffarel, a World Cup winner with Brazil, also moves on after three and a half years at the AXA Training Centre. He worked with the first team under both Jürgen Klopp and Arne Slot, helping the club to success in the Carabao Cup, FA Cup and Premier League.

“He Doesn’t Crumble” – Frimpong Tips Wirtz To Thrive At Liverpool

Jeremie Frimpong has tipped Florian Wirtz to become a fan favourite at Liverpool following the German’s record-breaking move from Bayer Leverkusen.

The two players reunite at Anfield after Liverpool paid a combined £150m to bring the duo to Merseyside this summer, Wirtz arriving for £116m and Frimpong for £29.5m.

Frimpong, speaking to Sky Sports News, couldn’t hide his admiration for his former teammate:
“He’s my boy. He’s a winner – a very, very special player and very hard working. The league will love him.

“I won’t have to talk much, just watch him. He doesn’t crumble under pressure; he likes pressure. He’s a guy that makes you enjoy football with the way he plays.”

“He Doesn’t Crumble” – Frimpong Tips Wirtz To Thrive At Liverpool

Wirtz is Liverpool’s most expensive signing of all time and arrives with huge expectations after a stunning season at Leverkusen, but Frimpong is confident he will handle the spotlight with ease.

The Dutchman is also excited about his own move back to the Premier League and says it’s been a long time coming.

“The Premier League is the best league in the world. I grew up in Manchester, so I always wanted to come back. It was always the plan.”

“I know what being a champion is like at Bayer Leverkusen, so joining a champion team is a privilege, especially for Liverpool. To go from watching them to playing for them is crazy.”

“The manager has told me how I can help the team, and he really likes me as a player. It’s given me extra motivation and belief.”

Former Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders has joined Manchester City as Pep Guardiola’s new number two.

Lijnders left Anfield at the end of the 2023/24 season following Jurgen Klopp’s departure, ending nearly a decade of service at the club. The 42-year-old briefly took charge of RB Salzburg at the start of last season but was dismissed in December.

He now makes a surprise return to the Premier League,  this time on the blue side of Manchester.

Lijnders is joined at City by James French, Liverpool’s former first-team opposition analyst, who also worked under Klopp.

Emotional Alexander-Arnold in Tears as Liverpool Lift Premier League Trophy

Trent Alexander-Arnold described his emotional day at Anfield as the best of his life after helping Liverpool end the season as Premier League champions.

The right-back came on at half-time in the 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace and played a key role in the fightback, as Mohamed Salah scored late to cancel out Crystal Palace’s early lead. Liverpool were down to 10 men after Ryan Gravenberch was sent off, but still found a way through.

Alexander-Arnold, who has been strongly linked with a move to Real Madrid, wasn’t sure how the fans would react after he was booed by some supporters when he came on against Arsenal two weeks ago. Even former boss Jürgen Klopp had called out the fans over the treatment he received.

But this time, Anfield welcomed him with loud cheers as he replaced Conor Bradley. The ovation continued when he went up to receive his winner’s medal and later lifted the Premier League trophy in front of the Kop.

“I didn’t know what to expect at Anfield after what happened a few weeks ago,” he said. “To get the reception I got means more than anything to me.

“I hope that one day the fans of this club will be able to recognise the hard work and everything I’ve done for this team. There wasn’t a second where I didn’t think about this team. I’ve loved every single minute of it. It goes down as the best day of my life.”

New manager Arne Slot also enjoyed a warm reception from the fans after guiding Liverpool to the title in his first season. He hinted at plans to strengthen the team this summer, with reports linking the Reds to German star Florian Wirtz.

“We are very happy with the squad we have,” said Slot. “This club has always shown that if there is a chance to improve, we go for it.

“Big summer or not, it is already big because we won the league. But we always want to get better. Next season the competition will be even stronger, so we must improve as well.”

  • Jurgen Klopp ‘disappointed’ by Liverpool fans booing Trent Alexander-Arnold

Jurgen Klopp ‘disappointed’ by Liverpool fans booing Trent Alexander-Arnold

A disappointed JUrgen Klopp had to turn off his television after hearing Liverpool fans boo Trent Alexander-Arnold during the 2–2 home draw against Arsenal earlier this month.

Alexander-Arnold is set to join Real Madrid this summer after spending two decades at the club. Born and raised in Liverpool, Alexander-Arnold joined the club’s academy at age six and made his first-team debut under Klopp.

The 26-year-old right-back, widely regarded as one of the best in the world and also capable of playing in midfield, has made 353 appearances for the Reds. During Klopp’s nine-year spell, he helped Liverpool win the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, and Club World Cup.

“I was watching the game when he came on and heard the boos,” Klopp said on Friday at a charity event for the LFC Foundation. “I’m older now, so I thought it might be my hearing—I turned up the volume. It took me another 10 seconds to realize it was real, and then I turned the TV off. Honestly, I couldn’t have been more disappointed in that moment. That’s not who we are, not at all.”

“I’m not saying you can’t be disappointed or upset. I’m saying: don’t forget. This club doesn’t forget,” he said. “He gave everything every single day for this badge. After 20 years, he decided he wanted a new challenge. If anyone should be upset about that, it’s the owners, and they’re not.”

“This boy, 18 years old, scored a free-kick in Hoffenheim that helped us qualify for the Champions League. Against Barcelona, he set up that cheeky goal for 4-0—a game and result that may never happen again.”

Liverpool were crowned Premier League champions last month with four games to spare. They will lift the trophy this Sunday after their final home game against Crystal Palace.

  • Mo Salah On His Ballon D’Or Chances

Mo Salah On His Ballon D’Or Chances

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah believes the 2024/25 season has given him his strongest case yet to win the Ballon d’Or, following a sensational campaign that helped fire the Reds to the Premier League title.

The 32-year-old has scored 28 goals and provided 18 assists in the league this season, leading the race for the Golden Boot and playing a vital role in Arne Slot’s title-winning side.

Salah, who recently signed a new two-year deal at Anfield, told Sky Sports:

“I would say I never had a season like this and winning big trophies so I would say this is my best chance to get it right now while I’m in the club because it’s been a crazy year, a crazy season with a trophy. It’s given me a good chance.”

Mo Salah On His Ballon D’Or Chances

The Egyptian is among the frontrunners for this year’s Ballon d’Or, with the winner to be crowned in Paris on September 22. But he will face stiff competition from Barcelona teenager Lamine Yamal and PSG forward Ousmane Dembélé – both of whom enjoyed stellar seasons of their own.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot backed Salah during his Friday press conference, praising his forward’s incredible consistency and impact.

“It’s completely true,” Slot said. “He’s had very, very good seasons at Liverpool, but this one probably stands out in terms of numbers and if you add to that that we also won the league,e it will probably give him a fair chance.

Arne Slot admits stunning Mohamed Salah form makes new Liverpool contract 'more expensive'

“Unfortunately, for all football fans around the world, he’s not the only player who’s had a great season. But if there was ever a chance for hi,m it will be this season. If not, he’s going to try and push even harder next season.”

“In terms of individual performance, [getting better] would be nearly impossible, although never say something is impossible for Mo because he’s proven that he can always raise his game even further.”

If Salah does go on to lift the Ballon d’Or, he would become the first Liverpool player to win the honour since Michael Owen in 2001.

  • Alexis Mac Allister ruled out of Liverpool’s final game

Alexis Mac Allister ruled out of Liverpool’s final game

Arne Slot has confirmed that Alexis Mac Allister will not be involved in Liverpool’s final Premier League game of the season against Crystal Palace on Sunday.

The Argentine midfielder was absent from the Reds’ 3-2 defeat to Brighton on Monday night and won’t return to action before the campaign ends. His last appearance came in the 2-2 draw with Arsenal at Anfield.

Speaking after the match at the Amex Stadium, Slot praised Mac Allister’s fighting spirit but explained that the 26-year-old needs time to rest and recover ahead of the new season.

Alexis Mac Allister ruled out of Liverpool's final game

“Alexis will not play for us this season anymore,” said the Liverpool head coach. “He needs rest at this moment in time to recover completely and to be ready for the start of next season, that will be no problem.”

Mac Allister, who joined from Brighton last summer, has played a key role in Liverpool’s title-winning season, making 49 appearances in all competitions, including 30 in the league.

    Slot added:

“I think he played throughout the last part of the season with the Argentinian mentality that he has — never gives up, no matter what he feels. But it’s not smart to play a player that has not a big injury, but something to take a risk with.”

Although he won’t feature against Palace, Mac Allister is expected to be part of the post-match celebrations as Liverpool lift the Premier League trophy at Anfield.

  • “He gave it all to the fans”- Salah defends Trent after boos

“He gave it all to the fans”- Salah defends Trent after boos

Mohamed Salah has come to the defence of Trent Alexander-Arnold after the Liverpool vice-captain was booed by a section of fans following the announcement of his summer departure.

Trent, 26, will leave the club at the end of June when his contract expires, with Real Madrid expected to complete a deal for the academy graduate.

He made his first appearance since confirming the news during Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal at Anfield, coming on as a substitute to a mixed reception.

But speaking to Gary Neville in a Sky Sports interview, Salah said the right-back deserved nothing but appreciation from the fans.

“I think somehow the fans were being harsh with him,” Salah said. “He didn’t deserve it at the time. He deserved the fans to treat him the best way possible because he gave it all to the fans.”

“We shouldn’t act this way with anyone who appreciates the people, even if they’ve been here for six months. Imagine someone who gave you his all for 20 years. It shouldn’t be like this.”

“I hope that will change next game – against Brighton or in the last game of the season – because he deserves the farewell.”

Trent has made 353 appearances for the Reds, scoring 23 goals and winning every major honour, including two Premier League titles and the Champions League.

    Salah continued:

“I really love him. I think he deserves the best farewell leaving the club. He’s done a lot for the city and the club. He’s one of the best players in the club’s history. He gave it all.”

The Egyptian forward, who signed a new deal with Liverpool last month, said he didn’t try to convince Trent to stay after they spoke privately about his decision.

“He spoke to me about it. It’s his decision for sure. He’s won it all,  twice or three times – what more can he do?”

“I didn’t try to convince him to stay because I know 20 years at a club is not easy. It’s so tough.”

Conor Bradley signs new four-year Liverpool contract

Conor Bradley has signed a new four-year contract with Liverpool, extending his stay at Anfield after an impressive rise through the ranks.

The 21-year-old right-back is set to feature more prominently under new head coach Arne Slot, especially with Trent Alexander-Arnold set to leave the club this summer.

Bradley, who is the current captain of the Northern Ireland national team, could still face competition at right-back, with Liverpool reportedly eyeing Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong.

“I’m very proud and happy,” he told the club’s official website. “To sign another contract, I’m excited to see what the next steps on our journey together will be. You’ve just got to keep your head down and keep working hard.”

Bradley joined the Reds from Dungannon United in 2019 and has developed steadily, including a standout loan at Bolton Wanderers in 2022-23, where he was named Player of the Year.

He returned to Liverpool and has since made 50 first-team appearances across the last two seasons.

“It’s been a fantastic two years,” he added. “Coming back from loan, doing so well last year and continuing that this year. Hopefully we can keep going and keep making more memories.”
